The Nexus S smart phone, from Google and Samsung, is now official and on its way to consumers, according to a blog post from Google.

Just in time for the holidays, the phone will hit Best Buy stores in the U.S. on Dec. 16. The Nexus S, which will be the first to feature the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, will cost $529 unlocked without a service contract. Packaged with a two-year T-Mobile agreement, it’ll run $199.

The device will feature a 4-inch touchscreen with a coating to minimize fingerprints and a built-in curve to fit users’ hands more comfortably. There’s also 16 gigabytes of storage space and a 1-gigahertz Samsung Hummingbird processor.

Along with a front-facing camera for video-chatting, there’s also a rear-facing 5-megapixel camera with flash capabilities. Users will be able to make calls through the Internet using Voice over IP (VoIP) technology.

And with near-field communications (NFC) support, users may be able to make mobile payments with a wave of their phones. An internal gyroscope will flip the screen as users turn the phone.

This is Google’s second attempt at a Nexus phone. Earlier this year, consumers bought the Nexus One directly through a Google Web store, which has since been closed.
