Google teases Android ‘Gingerbread’ update

With a teasing remark on Twitter, Google has fueled speculation that new details on Android’s next major update, dubbed ‘Gingerbread,’ will soon be revealed to hungry fans.
On Friday, GoogleMobile tweeted the following message: ‘Our cafes are baking something sweet.’
It doesn’t take a detective to infer that the message was referring to ‘Gingerbread,’ the update that will bring the Android OS to version 2.3. But lest you had any doubts, Google also attached a photo of scrumptious-looking Android-shaped gingerbread men to the tweet.
Google has become known for naming its Android updates after sweet confections. Android 2.2, the current OS version available, is also known as ‘Froyo’ (frozen yogurt in normal speak). The previous version was the ‘Eclair.’ The future Android 3.0 is already referred to by the moniker ‘Honeycomb.’
The tweet has riled up the blog world with rumors about the upcoming OS update, bolstered in part by speculation of the Samsung Nexus S, a follow-up to Google’s Nexus One. Many Google fans online are betting that more Gingerbread information will be released at the Web. 2.0 Summit in San Francisco later Monday.
