UCLA is one of a handful of schools recruiting Tyler Gaffney. And in some ways, the Bruins are lucky to be one of the programs still in running to land a verbal commitment from the 6-foot-1, 215-pound senior from San Diego Cathedral. However, Rick Neuheisel & Co. are unlucky in some ways too.

Gaffney is also interested in Notre Dame, Stanford and USC, and according to these quotes, plans are in the works for a visit to each campus at some point in the near future. Unfortunately, for the many Bruin backers out there, there was no mention of a potential trip to Westwood anytime soon.

The thing that puzzles me most about this whole situation is, highly-touted runners such as Santa Clara’s Cierre Wood and Texas’ Stepfan Taylor have already pledged to the Fighting Irish and Cardinal, respectively. And we all know how quickly the Trojans’ backfield can become over-crowded.

UCLA would be a perfect fit for Gaffney. Los Osos’ Richard Brehaut is already onboard, along with defense standouts like Arcadia’s Todd Golper, Bishop Amat’s Sheldon Price and Mission Viejo’s Alex Mascarenas. It’s up to the Bruins now. It will be interesting to see if they can secure a commitment.
