Skype to reimburse paying customers after outage

Skype 2 With its core services stabilized, Skype announced Thursday afternoon that it would be reimbursing its paying customers for the inconvenience caused by yesterday's massive service outage.

 

Pre-paid and pay-as-you-go customers will receive via e-mail a voucher for 30 minutes of free calling to landlines anywhere in the world, and subscribers will be credited with one week's subscription service to be applied from the next renewal date, CEO Tony Bates said in a statement.

Bates said audio, video and instant messaging are running normally, and the site is back to 90% of its normal user volume. Traffic peaked at about 20 million users Thursday, he said. Offline instant messaging and group video calling are still unavailable.

 

The company has said that a number of the "supernodes" that connect users failed Wednesday due to a software error. The problems started about 9 a.m. Wednesday.
