Opinion: A Sunday Thought: Some old guy talks slowly about being American in another time

Every once in a while The Ticket comes upon a video that makes us think about something beyond the every day. We call them Sunday Thoughts. We had one a couple of weeks ago that some readers found provocative and visually stunning. It’s still available still stunning right here.

The other day thanks to a loyal Ticket reader, we came upon this video from some archives. The guy looks vaguely familiar, doesn’t he? And he’s a pretty good talker too.

We weren’t always his biggest fan. We can remember him selling black and white refrigerators.

But watching this short video, hearing that familiar voice and listening to what he had to say, we were struck by the timelessness of his message. Being around children at such holiday times has a way of making adults ponder the more important things.

How did he know these words would have relevance in a new century that he lived in briefly but, because of Alzheimer’s, never really knew?

Anyway, Santa won’t be arriving for a while yet. Please take a look at this video and let us know what it made you think about on this otherwise quiet Sunday (yes, Monday if you’re in Asia).
