For many, one of the surprising aspects of California’s passage of a controversial ballot measure banning gay marriage -- Proposition 8 -- was that it won narrow approval in Los Angeles County.

Some of our hard-working colleagues at The Times have put together a ‘results by precincts’ map that, through color shading, provides a fascinating at-a-glance look at where support for or opposition to the measure was the most intense -- and where it was more mixed.

A mouse click on this page also calls up a comparable map for results from a handful of other contests -- including the presidential race. Barack Obama carried the county with almost 70% of the vote, so for Democrats, this depiction is literally a rhapsody in blue.

For those wanting a city-by-city breakdown of the vote on Prop. 8 within the county, that’s available in chart form.

The measure’s opponents are pursuing legal avenues in hopes of voiding it; The Times’ Dan Morain has the latest on those efforts here.
