John McCain long ago predicted that he would have to come from behind in the presidential race, and he foresaw his campaign surging in the 48 hours before election day.

In an interview today with Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity, he insisted that momentum is building for him and ‘that’s what our pollsters are showing.’

If it’s going to happen, the public polls also should start to reflect such movement by the end of this week -- especially in light of a marked increase in McCain ads that began Monday in the key states of Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania (see here for more on this trio).

The Nielsen Co. today released a report that drives home the extent to which Barack Obama has dominated the airwaves, but that also shows McCain is at least trying to hold his own in the campaign’s last week.

On Sunday, the Nielsen folks counted 938 TV ads touting Obama in Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania. For McCain, the total was 264 -- meaning he was outgunned by more than 3-to-1.

But on Monday, McCain substantially increased his ad presence in the three states, airing 1,057 spots.

The massively-financed Obama campaign wasn’t asleep at the switch -- it aired 2,118 ads on Monday in the three states.

Quite a bit ... but a reduced advantage over McCain of 2-to-1.
