Football: Sylmar is on the move up in the City Section

If you want an early indication of a City Section school making great progress, it’s Sylmar, which is loading up on some very good young players.
The Spartans made it to the semifinals of a seven on seven passing tournament at UCLA on Saturday before losing to Los Alamitos. Serra won the tournament, 19-18, over Los Alamitos.
Sophomore quarterback Clarence Williams is going to be a versatile All-City player one day. Incoming freshman quarterback Antonio Haygood throws a nice ball. Sophomore receiver Andrew Simpson had a big tournament, as did tight end Jose Holguin, a senior transfer who has been a baseball player.
Owen Russell, a senior cornerback, has been the talk of summer competitions with his strong play.
Coach Chris Richards is positioning the Spartans to make a run at San Fernando in the Valley Mission League. The Oct. 4 game between the Tigers and Spartans at Sylmar should be a fun one.
On another note, the tug of war competition at the Los Angeles County Fellowship of Christian Athletes competition on Saturday was won by Long Beach Poly over Loyola. West Torrance linemen won the overall trophy as the Big Man Champion.
