Showing better poise in the fourth quarter, Westchester won its 12th City Section Division I championship on Saturday night, defeating El Camino Real, 65-59, at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Comets pulled away after 10 lead changes in the second half. A Cameron Young three-point play with 4:05 left gave Westchester the lead for good at 52-51. Senior guard Matthew Grant made a three-pointer and followed with a basket to ignite the Comets. He finished with 11 points. Darnell Brown led the Comets with 12 points.

Julian Richardson scored 13 points and Kelton Conway 12 for the Conquistadores (28-3). Westchester went the entire third quarter without scoring on a basket, relying on 10 free throws in a foul-plagued second half.

‘When it came time to make plays, they made the plays,’ El Camino Real Coach David Rebibo said.

Said Grant: ‘It feels great. It’s unbelievable. I’m so glad for my teammates.’
