On Saturday night, former Oaks Christian Coach Bill Redell, at age 71, coaches his first game as head coach for Occidental College with a 7 p.m. home game against Pacific University.

‘It’s really fun to go back to the college I played for 50 years ago,’ Redell said. ‘The kids are great. I’m having a lot of fun.’

Redell hired former Loyola Coach Jeff Kearin to coach running backs, and former Encino Crespi player Lance Fauria is coaching tight ends.

He’s working long hours, not getting home until after 10 p.m.

‘I almost got hit on the field today,’ Redell said earlier this week.

He won seven Southern Section championships at Oaks Christian. Now he gets to see if his organizational and motivational skills can work at Occidental.
