During the debate before the approval of new CIF transfer rules, there was a commitment made that section commissioners would be proactive when trends occurred as far as schools gaining an unusual number of transfers.

Even though the new rules don’t take effect until July 1, the Southern Section office has begun to look into an unusual number of transfers from West Adams of the City Section to Compton Centennial. According to the Southern Section office, it has received transfer paperwork for eight former West Adams students.

Russell Shaw, the former West Adams football coach, has been running the Centennial program while the school searches for a new coach. Shaw said by phone Tuesday that he was unaware of any West Adams transfers other than his own son.

Southern Section spokesman Thom Simmons said the Southern Section was working with the school to ‘gather information on the eligibility status’ of the players.
