Santa Ana Mater Dei is one quarter away from defending its CIF Division I state championship and winning its third straight state title overall.

The Monarchs lead Berkeley 41-26 with eight minutes left at Power Balance Pavilion in Sacramento and, not surprisingly, Gatorade State Player of the Year Nirra Fields leads all scorers with 25 points.

Mater Dei outscored the Yellowjackets 12-8 in the third quarter.

This is shaping up as a replay of last year’s state championship game in which the Monarchs defeated Berkeley 59-47.
