Former Carson Coach Elijah Asante said he has accepted the offer to become the head coach at Santa Fe Springs St. Paul.

It is a historic hire in that he is an African American coach taking over at a school that once was a football powerhouse and he will be replacing Marijon Ancich, second-winningest coach in California history.

Asante guided Carson to consecutive appearances in the City Section Division I championship game in his two years as head coach there.

He also interviewed for the vacant position at Harvard-Westlake, but that interview process won’t be finished until next month.

He breaks into a private-school arena in which there have been few African Americans as head coaches.
