Did anyone notice that all five Marmonte League football teams won their playoff openers on Friday in the Northern Division?

‘That’s pretty awesome,’ St. Bonaventure Coach Todd Therrien said. ‘They should give us eight playoff spots.’

There’s a good chance that come semifinal time, all four teams will be from the Marmonte League.

In fact, Moopark plays at Thousand Oaks on Friday in a quarterfinal rematch of a regular-season game in which Thousand Oaks won on a game-ending field goal.

Marmonte teams are favored in all four games. No. 1 Westlake plays Newhall Hart at College of the Canyons. No. 3 St. Bonaventure hosts Canyon Country Canyon. And No. 2 Oaks Christian travels to Palmdale Highland.

The interesting part is the rematches that will be soon taking place. In football, it is very difficult to beat a good team twice in a season.

Just talk to former Woodland Hills Taft Coach Troy Starr, who used to beat City Section teams in the regular season, only to lose to them in the championship game.

The difference, however, is that Westlake (11-0) has been far and away better than every Marmonte team so far. But a looming Oaks Christian-St. Bonaventure rematch will be much talked about. Oaks Christian won the first time when the lights suddenly dimmed, disrupting St. Bonaventure’s momentum. Somebody will put a lockbox on the light switch if they meet again.
