To win a championship, teams need a top quarterback. It’s the most important position in football, and this season, the search is on for the No. 1 quarterback in the Southland.

Is it Travis Wilson of San Clemente, committed to Utah? Is it Marc Evans of Ventura St. Bonaventure? Is it Matt Morin of Temecula Chaparral?

The recruiting gurus look for the top college prospect, but the most effective quarterback doesn’t always get the love from college recruiters. Maybe that person isn’t considered tall enough, but helping a team win a championship is what the top quarterback is supposed to do.

So beware of Cody Pittman of Anaheim Servite, a senior who guided the Friars to the Pac-5 title as a junior. Troy Williams of Narbonne, a junior, could lead his team to the City Section Division I title.

The junior class might have more college prospects than the senior class, with Williams, Hayden Rettig of L.A. Cathedral, Andrew Elffers of Pasadena Maranatha, Luke Falk of Oaks Christian, Jared Lebowitz of St. Francis and Kelly Hilinski of Sherman Oaks Notre Dame.
