Athletes who attended Van Nuys Montclair Prep are allowed to transfer without a loss of eligibility after the school dropped its sports program, but there’s another CIF rule that could come into play.

Players are not allowed to follow their former coach to a new school. If it happens in the first 24 months following that coach’s move, the player would be ineligible to participate at the new school.

Of course, if the athlete transfers first and then the coach shows up, that would be a different story. But there are former Montclair Prep coaches who need jobs, so the scramble is on and could get complicated.

There’s always the option of seeking an appeal to the section commissioner because of the rare circumstances involved.
