High school baseball fans who root for Orange Lutheran and Newhall Hart are feeling very proud after former pitching standouts Gerrit Cole and Trevor Bauer went No. 1 and No. 3 in the amateur draft to the Pittsburgh Pirates and Arizona Diamondbacks.

Each chose to attend UCLA rather than head for the pros out of high school, with Bauer skipping his senior year at Hart. Their decisions were validated, and they have bright futures.

Another person feeling good is the Diamondbacks’ local scout, Hal Kurtzman, who scouted Bauer in high school and wanted his team to pick him on Monday.
