Baseball: Crescenta Valley has plenty of pitching

There aren’t a lot of schools that have the pitching depth of Crescenta Valley (8-1), which continues to use a four-man rotation featuring three juniors and one senior.
Kyle Murray, Elliot Surrey and Troy Mulcahey are the juniors, with Kyle Pomeroy the senior. Coach Phil Torres said by using four different starters on the mound, it doesn’t give other teams in the Pacific League the chance to get used to one or two pitchers.
The juniors took their lumps as freshmen, improved as sophomores and now they’re on the verge of becoming standouts.
‘Patience has paid off,’ Torres said.
The Falcons are in Southern Section Division 2.
Crescenta Valley plays Burbank Burroughs on Friday night at Stengel Field, then opens the Babe Herman tournament on Saturday.
As usual, the Falcons have lots of prizes to give away at their home games. They have a free ice cream giveaway if any player hits a home run in the bottom of the third inning. Surrey delivered recently, and that created excitement among the young fans.
‘He’s the playground hero of all the elementary school students,’ Torres said.
