Mater Dei avoided another defeat against a Los Angeles City Section opponent on its home floor, pulling out a 75-73 victory over Taft with a late flourish.

Tyler Lamb’s three-pointer gave the Monarchs a 72-68 lead and after Bryce Jones hit one of two free throws, the Toreadors had a chance to tie the score when Landon Drew launched a three-pointer. But the shot was off the mark and Katin Reinhardt made a layup to give the Monarchs a 74-69 lead.

A late three-pointer by Jones was too little too late for Taft, which was hoping to repeat Fairfax’s feat of knocking off Mater Dei on its home floor.
