Baseball: Chatsworth edges Banning, 1-0

In a matchup between two of the best baseball teams in the City Section, Aaron Brown struck out nine in 5 1/3 innings and Steve Karkenny picked up the save to give Chatsworth a 1-0 victory over Wilmington Banning.

Banning All-City left-hander Jonathan Hernandez was the loser, striking out eight and giving up five hits. Ricky Obando drove in Brown with an RBI double in the first inning. Chatsworth is 5-3 and Banning is 6-4.

In an East Valley League game, Arleta (8-2, 2-0) defeated Verdugo Hills, 7-2. Ivan Ceja threw a five-hitter and hit a two-run home run.

Woodland Hills Taft (7-2) defeated Sylmar, 8-3, to win its fifth consecutive game. Cody deSpain had a single, double and triple. Mike Hymes also had three hits.

In the Olympic League, Montclair Prep overcame a seven-run deficit to defeat L.A. Baptist, 9-7. Tony Rosales and Max Fried had two hits apiece for the Mounties (7-2, 3-0).
