Baseball: Lakewood improves to 9-0

There might not be a better baseball team in Southern California right now than Lakewood, which improved to 9-0 on Thursday after sweeping La Mirada in a doubleheader by scores of 10-3 and 8-0.

In the first game, freshman J.P. Crawford and Zach Alofaituli each had three hits. In the second game, Jacob Worrell hit a three-run home run and Jeff Yamaguchi had a two-run home run. Sophomore Shane Watson threw six shutout innings.

La Puente Bishop Amat defeated Chatsworth, 7-1, at USC. Paul Paez struck out the final 12 batters of the game and finished with 14 strikeouts.

Arleta (5-2) defeated Garfield, 9-4. Ivan Ceja threw a four-hitter. Next up for Arleta is a Saturday game against Kennedy at El Camino Real in the Chatsworth tournament.Birmingham (5-2) continued its improvement from a season ago, beating Montclair Prep, 9-2. Alberto Gonzalez improved to 2-0. Randy Medellin allowed no runs in 2 1/3 innings. Kevin Torres had three hits.

San Fernando defeated Reseda Cleveland, 4-3. Jose Reyes went four for four. Taft (5-2) defeated Eagle Rock, 9-5. Cody deSpain went three for three.

Wilmington Banning (5-2) defeated South Torrance, 6-2. Alex Sixtos threw a four-hitter. San Pedro defeated Palisades, 9-3. Jonathon Mata struck out 11.
