Boys' basketball: McKnight sets Southern Section record

December 2, 2009 | 10:44 pm

Gary McKnight became the winningest boys' baskettball coach in Southern Section history tonight after Mater Dei defeated Norwalk, 116-53, to give McKnight his 830th victory.

McKnight moved past former Oxnard Santa Clara Coach Lou Cvijanovich, who finished his career with 829 victories. McKnight is now 14 victories short of passing Mike Phelps, who coached at Alameda St. Joseph and Oakland Bishop O'Dowd, as the winningest coach in California high school history.

Tyler Lamb scored 24 points on nine-for-17 shooting and Keala King had 21 points and nine rebounds for the Monarchs (2-0) during the victory over Norwalk.
