Canyon Springs’ Estevan Cabanas can’t claim to be the best wrestler in his weight class in the state. But now he can say he’s the best senior in that category in the country.

The runner-up to junior Jesse Delgado of Gilroy High in California, Cabanas won five matches in three days over the weekend to capture the national title at 112 pounds at the National High School Coaches Assn. Senior Nationals in Virginia Beach, Va.

‘I think it was the most fun I’ve ever had,’ Cabanas said.

What made it so fun?

‘Winning and sharing the experience with my teammates,’ he said.

Cabanas defeated Madison Gambrell of Clovis, 5-2, in a rematch of a match Cabanas lost, 3-1, in overtime in January during a tournament in Temecula.

‘It was exciting to get some revenge,’ Cabanas said.

Cabanas said he is considering Arizona State and Ohio State.
