There’s a new top dog in the Valley Mission League after Reseda defeated Sylmar, 90-85, on Wednesday night at Reseda to take over sole possession of first place.

Randall Harris made 11 of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter and finished with 20 points for the Regents (15-6, 5-0), who led by 17 points in the second quarter and were ahead by 16 points with 5 1/2 minutes left.

But Tyler Honeycutt, Sylmar’s 6-foot-8, UCLA-bound senior, scored 40 points and kept trying to lead the Spartans back from their huge deficit.

Reseda also received strong games from Andre Fowler, who had 22 points, and Ryan Watkins, who scored 19 points.

Sylmar dropped to 13-7 and 4-1. Reseda is trying to make a bid for a No. 1 seed for the City Section Division II playoffs.

Sylmar did not handle Reseda’s pressure defense very well and suffered defensive lapses.
