Did the Lakers play an unscheduled exhibition game in Bakersfield on Friday night? It was hard to believe it was just a high school football game considering the star wattage at Bakersfield Christian High for its game against Westlake Village Oaks Christian.

In the stands: Joe Montana, Wayne Gretzky and Will Smith.

On the field: Nick Montana, Trevor Gretzky, Trey Smith and Derek Carr.

Although Oaks Christian prevailed, 35-7, Lions Coach Bill Redell called Bakersfield Christian quarterback Carr, the younger brother of New York Giants quarterback David Carr, ‘the best guy I’ve seen since [Baltimore Ravens quarterback] Kyle Boller.’

Carr, who has committed to Fresno State, passed for 227 yards and a touchdown but also had three passes intercepted. Montana completed seven of 12 passes for 132 yards and three touchdowns.

‘Both players are outstanding,’ Redell said.

The Gretzkys and Smiths were among the early arrivals in a crowd that Redell estimated at 4,000 for the junior varsity game that included their sons. The throng grew by at least another 1,000 for the varsity game.

Joe and Jennifer Montana departed afterward to fly to South Bend, Ind., to watch Joe’s alma mater, Notre Dame, rally to defeat San Diego State.
