Believe.

Artur Jozkowiczs of Santa Monica, pictured, and Roger Downes of Santa Margarita believed in their teammates and in turn their teammates believed in them. They were right to do so.

Santa Monica (29-0-1) and Santa Margarita (23-4-3) were the best teams in the Southland this season and it should be no surprise because Jozkowiczs and Downes were the best players. What might be a surprise, however, is that both are heading to Loyola Marymount in the fall on soccer scholarships.

The Lions, who were 3-16-1, should be much improve next season with these two on the team. All you have to do is believe.

Offensive player of the year: Artur Jozkowiczs, Santa Monica-- An attacking-midfielder/forward, Jozkowiczs was a factor in 48 of his team’s amazing 110 goals this season. He also led the Vikings to their first Southern Section title and a Southern California Regional Division I championship.

Defensive player of the year: Roger Downes, Santa Margarita-- A central defender, he’s big, tall, physical and a tremendous leader. He was the heart and soul of a talented team that allowed only 12 goals this season, breaking a 15-year-old school record.

Their offensive-oriented formation led to a school-record 110 goals. Six different players scored in double figures and 14 different players found the back of the net.
