Why is Hart considered one of the favorites to challenge for the Foothill League and Division I baseball titles this season? Well, in one word: pitching. In two words: Trevor Bauer.

Sure, Mike Montgomery is still the ace of the staff, but Bauer has managed to stay very close to his southpaw contemporary in this young season. And on Monday, Bauer struck out 16, the last he caught swinging at a 91-mph fastball, to cap off a 2-0 victory in the second game of a double-header against West Torrance.

The 6-foot-1 junior has struck out 29 over 15 2/3 innings and has posted a 3-0 record heading into Hart’s league opener on Thursday against West Ranch.

If Bauer continues his emergence as one of the area’s top pitchers, the Indians’ first Foothill League title since 2001 could become a reality.
