Ex-Taft coach Starr takes Helix job in San Diego Section

Former Taft football Coach Troy Starr has accepted the position of head coach at La Mesa Helix High, which produced Reggie Bush and Alex Smith, near San Diego.

Starr spent the last year as director of football operations at the University of Florida but decided he wanted to return to coaching.

‘I’m a high school coach,’ he said.

Starr coached at Taft for 14 years, compiling a 139-36-1 record, including a City Section championship in 1998.

He plans to assume his new job at the end of next month.
