Wouldn’t be surprised if Dylan Royer was an unfamiliar name to most. He does, after all, play basketball all the way up north, at Morro Bay High, a two or three hour drive along the 101, traffic permitting. The senior guard is having a breakout season, regardless if it’s been done out of the spotlight.

Royer has scored 30 or more points in five games this season, including three of the last four, highlighted by a 35-point effort against Yucca Valley. He’s averaging 24.3 points per game, a total ranking him among the top 25 scorers in the state, according to MaxPreps.com.

As for the future, well, it appears as if Royer is capable of playing at the next level. Several Ivy League programs have expressed interest, though he hasn’t committed. That decision will be made later, most likely at some point after the season.

In the meantime, expect him to go about his business quietly for the Pirates, who play Cabrillo tonight in a Los Padres League game. Expect Royer to continue playing well, without much fanfare, without a majority of the public knowing exactly who he is or where he plays.
