Now that Rick Herrington is going to be roaming the sidelines at Alemany, he knows things are going to be a little different.

‘It’s going to be a little weird taking orders from my little brother,’ Herrington said. ‘But in all seriousness, I’m really excited about the change and, hopefully, I can add something to the program.’

On Tuesday, Rick Herrington, 47, made the emotional decision to resign from his defensive coordinator position at Hart to become the new defensive coordinator under Dean Herrington 44, at Alemany. Herrington will continue to teach at the Newhall-based school, but will officially have no involvement with a football program he’s been a part of for more than 30 years (he played for the Indians before graduating in 1978, then returned to coach freshmen in 1979).

‘It’s just that I’ve been [at Hart] 30 years and I wanted to do something different -- something that was a new challenge,’ said Herrington, 47. ‘It was an extremely tough decision.’

Of course, Rick is also probably getting a little more money to coach football 10 minutes down the I-5, and I’m sure that played at least some part in the decision. Hart Coach Mike Herrington, 50, said he wasn’t upset about Rick leaving, though.

‘It’s really a decision for him to make a little more money,’ said Mike Herrington, who has worked with brother Rick over the last 19 years. ‘You can’t really replace him.’

Dean Herrington was obviously thrilled to have his older brother join his staff. Here’s an audio interview with the Alemany coach:
