Somebody needs a parachute.

On Tuesday, before I had learned all of Monday’s scores, Norco was in The Times’ top 25 girls’ basketball rankings. Then I learned the Cougars had lost to Colony. Bad news for the Cougars.

On Thursday, worse news for the Cougars. Norco lost for the first time to Corona Santiago, 54-47. Santiago opened in 1995. It’s a terrific win for the Sharks, maybe not such a good win for Coach Jim LeDuc.

Norco has one of the Southland’s most exciting players, Cierra Windham, but this week are in free-fall.

Nice victories over Vista Murrieta, which was ranked No. 20 at the time, and No. 23 Troy have been offset somewhat by four losses in the last five games -- to No. 20 Mira Costa, 48-42; to No. 21 Foothill, 60-58; to No. 25 Colony,56-52, and now Santiago. The only victory was a squeaker, too, over Crenshaw, 40-39.

It won’t get any easier on Saturday, when Norco plays Ventura (15-1) at Magnolia, 3:30 p.m., as part of the Southern Section Team Challenge.
