When I came up with the idea to do SF Valley/North regional girls’ basketball rankings last week, I had no idea how difficult it would be coming up with a top-10 list. And let’s just say I have a new level of appreciation for what my colleagues Martin Henderson and Dan Arritt go through each week for their Southland rankings.

So here’s the first edition of my top-10 girls’ basketball rankings:

1. Ventura (16-1, 2-0) -- No standouts, but plenty of cohesive talent.
2. St. Joseph (16-1, 4-0) -- Have beaten opponents by an average of nearly 32 points.
3. Saugus (15-3, 2-0) -- Still my favorite for the Foothill League title.
4. Harvard-Westlake (11-7, 3-0) -- Strong performance against Marlborough, ranked No. 15 by The Times.
5. Oaks Christian (11-2, 3-0) -- Lions riding nine-game winning streak.

6. Royal (14-4, 5-1) -- Looking to rebound after tough loss to Newbury Park.
7. Valencia (12-6, 1-1) -- Overtime victory over Hart proved this team is dangerous.
8. Hart (8-7, 1-1) -- Never count out reigning Foothill League MVP Megan Ford or the Indians.
9. Canyon (11-7, 2-0) -- Trampled West Ranch and Golden Valley last week.
10. Knight (12-3, 5-0) -- Leading scorer Gelenda Loving has averaged 18 ppg in last three games.

As always, it’s your inalienable right to criticize my top 10. Heck, you can even post your own top 10 on the comment board and let the world take a stab at criticizing you. Come on, it’s fun!

Also, here’s this week’s Southern Section coaches’ poll.
