There's a new kid on the court at Campbell Hall
I remember going out to cover basketball games at Campbell Hall last season, talking to Coach Terry Kelly after his team's victories and having him introduce me to a kid he often referred to as a potential big-time contributor for the program. That youngster was Austin McBroom, the same Austin McBroom who's starting as a freshman for the Vikings this year.
With experienced players such as Jrue Holiday, Dallas Rutherford and Keegan Hornbuckle around, he's not expected to do much. All that's asked from McBroom is that he play within himself. And, surprisingly enough, he has, averaging 10.3 points, 4.0 assists and 3.8 steals a game heading into Thursday's nationally televised game on ESPN against Lakewood, Oh. St. Edward.
Keep in mind, the purpose of this blog is not to put any added pressure on McBroom. I'm not going to call him a fabulous freshman, or a freshman phenom. I've never been big on annointing anyone as the next big thing. There's too much hype nowadays. Figured I'd mention him just in case someone is tuned into the game, wonders about who the kid is and doesn't have Kelly around to explain.
