Basketball fans out there growing tired of football, I’ve got some good news for you, courtesy of Jack Pollon, a well-known figure in Southern California hoops circles. After speaking with him briefly this afternoon about next week’s 10th annual Winter Slam Jam tournament, Pollon is right, his showcase could end up being just what the doctor ordered for those eager to get back into the gym and see some action on the hardwood.

The team to beat is Simi Valley, which was No. 21 in The Times’ preseason rankings and is led by seniors Lorne Jackson and Michael Meza. The Pioneers open up first-round play Monday against Arleta at Chatsworth High. Beyond that, a showdown in the Dec. 15 championship game against fellow upperclassman Justin Cook and Renaissance Academy looms likely.

High-scoring Jacob Ranger and Carpinteria could pose problems for a number of opponents. And it will be interesting to see how Sylmar responds after several players transferred over the summer amid controversy. Sure, it’s early in the basketball season. In fact, we’re in the middle of the second week of play, but for some, tournaments like the Winter Slam Jam can never be early enough.
