A few days ago, we asked the readers of Unleashed to submit name suggestions for the Obama family dog.

There were a lot of contenders and all had merit, but one rose to the top of the shortlist quickly.

Commenter Bill submits:

Maverick -- after Tom Cruise’s character in ‘Top Gun.’ Or did you have someone else in mind?

Besides being the handle for America’s most lovable fighter pilot, Maverick as a name for the first dog is exactly the kind of cross-the-aisle inclusion President Obama pledges to embrace.

What better gesture of bipartisanship than to name your best friend after your former enemy from the most contentious presidential race in history?

First dog Maverick would transcend the role of family pet to be a bearer of a grand message: that everyone has a place in this White House (as long as they don’t piddle on the carpet).

Congratulations, Bill, on being top dog in our contest.
