Apple says iOS 5 causes battery problems, fix promised

Apple on Wednesday confirmed to a couple of news outlets that iOS 5, the latest version of its iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch operating system, has some battery issues -- issues that will be fixed in a software update.
For the last couple weeks, a rumbling on the Web has grown, filled with complaints on battery life on iOS 5 devices, particularly the iPhone 4S. Different theories have been batted around as to just what the problem might be -- is it Siri, the new notification center, geofencing or maybe something else?
Apple however isn’t saying exactly what the problem is. In a statement emailed to All Things D and The Loop, Apple said: ‘A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices... We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks.’
A survey of reporters at the Times with iPhone 4 and 4S handsets and iPads running iOS 5 has found no bad battery life over here, but the chorus of complaints isn’t likely to cease across the web until Apple has a fix in place.
Such a fix could come in the next batch of updates to iOS 5, which already has been pushed out to developers in the form of iOS 5.0.1 Beta which ‘fixes bugs affecting battery life,’ according to the website MacRumors. Other updates coming down the pipeline include adding ‘multitasking gestures for original iPad,’ a fix that ‘resolves bugs with documents in the cloud,’ ‘security improvements’ and improved dictation voice recognition for Australian iOS users.
