Windows Phone 7 ‘Mango’ hitting manufacturers; phones due this fall

The newest version of Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 operating system, nicknamed Mango, has been delivered to phone manufacturers and will be on new handsets this fall.
Mango is promising to push Windows Phone 7 to be even more competitive with rivals such as Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS with hundreds of new features such as multitasking, faster Web browsing, support for HTML5, a feature called Threads (which unifies text, instant messaging and Facebook chat into one place), said Terry Myerson, a Microsoft spokesman, in a company blog post.
‘The Windows Phone development team officially signed off on the release to manufacturing [RTM] build of ‘Mango’ –- the latest version of the Windows Phone operating system,’ Myerson said in his post. ‘This marks the point in the development process where we hand code to our handset and mobile operator partners to optimize Mango for their specific phone and network configurations.’
And, as reported on the Technology Blog back in May, many Mango features will add abilities that Android and iOS users have had for a while such as being able to search for nearby restaurants and businesses, or perform voice-based Web searches.
