Camera gear heads, prepare to freak out.

On Thursday the Photojojo Store released the iPhone SLR Mount, a hardware attachment that allows you to use your fancy Canon EOS or Nikon SLR lenses while shooting pictures with your iPhone. It costs $249 for the iPhone 4 version and $190 if you get it for the iPhone 3GS or iPhone 3G models.

‘The iPhone4 takes pretty decent photos and gorgeous video, but its limitation is the lens built into it that can’t go wide or give you shallow depth of field,’ said Amit Gupta, founder of Photojojo who worked with a company in Hong Kong to get this product made. ‘But if you use an SLR lens you can focus on a person or subject and blur out the background for that shallow depth of field effect.’

It also allows you to zoom in without compromising the resolution.

The SLR Mount is a hardware-only device -- the case is made out of aluminum and custom fitted to the phone, making it strong enough to hold up seriously heavy lenses. Gupta says the product is not for the casual picture taker who is generally satisfied with the quality of iPhone 4 photos. Instead, it is for serious photographers who already have these thousand-dollar-plus lenses lying around.

Digital photography is in a really interesting place right now. The iPhone 4 is the most-used camera on Flickr now, and it’s generally acknowledged that smartphone cameras are well on their way to replacing the standard point and shoot. We’ve officially moved to a place where a camera on a smartphone like the iPhone 4 isn’t just a good cellphone camera, it’s actually a good camera. And with attachments like this, it can be a seriously good camera.

When asked what the future of digital photography has in store for us, Gupta said: ‘It’s tough to say. We’re really excited about new ways to use existing lenses, and the next version of the iPhone and Android phones. The iPhone 4 is already phenomenal and the sensors are only getting better.’
