Lady Gaga became the first Twitter user to reach 10 million followers this weekend, setting a new record for the social networking site.

Gaga hit the number Saturday and announced it in a tweet to her fans, whom she often calls ‘little monsters.’

Gaga’s celebratory tweet, which included a link to a photo of her in England, read:

http://twitpic.com/4xtnac - 10MillionMonsters! I’m speechless, we did it! Its an illness how I love you. Leaving London smiling.

Her savvy in the world of social media should come as no surprise.

A collaboration called GagaVille between the pop singer and Zynga, the maker of the Facebook game FarmVille, is set to roll out in time to hype up Gaga’s new album ‘Born This Way.’ She’s also the creative director at Polaroid, looking to return the camera maker to mainstream attention. And she’s been the focus of an interview at Google, in which she took questions over Twitter and YouTube.

The milestone is one for Gaga as well as Twitter. The microblogging service has rocketed in popularity since its founding a little more than five years ago.

In April 2009, actor and technophile Ashton Kutcher was the first to reach 1 million Twitter followers, beating CNN to the number.

This March, Charlie Sheen attained 1 million Twitter followers in just over 25 hours. Coincidentally, CBS recently announced that Kutcher will replace Sheen on the sitcom ‘Two and a Half Men’ this summer.

Another testament to celebrities’ sizable audience on Twitter: R&B singer Beyonce Knowles has more than 1 million followers and she has yet to send out a single tweet, as noted by the website Media Bistro.

Pop singer Justin Bieber could be the next to hit 10 million followers. He already has more than 9,600,000.
