Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network was failing to provide service to customers on Wednesday, leaving many to run on the carrier’s slower 3G networks.

The nation’s largest mobile service provider confirmed the 4G problems in a Twitter message, stating:

We’re aware of an issue with #4G #LTE connections & our network engineers are working to resolve quickly. Will update here.

Verizon officials were unavailable for comment on the 4G problems as of Wednesday afternoon, and the company has offered no indication of how many 4G customers are being affected.

The problems, however, have been taking place since at least about 8 a.m. PDT Wednesday, when Verizon’s first tweet on the issue was sent out.

In another message on Twitter, Verizon said it was investigating its 4G LTE network issue and that its newly released HTC ThunderBolt handsets, which can run on 4G connections, should be able to make voice calls, though receiving data would be slow.

At about 1 p.m., Verizon said it had made progress in getting its 4G service back in action, saying in a tweet:

We have determined cause of 4G LTE issue & are working with major vendors to restore connections. Details as they come.

The ThunderBolt, which runs Google’s Android OS, is Verizon’s only 4G phone so far, though others are planned. The carrier also sells 4G LTE wireless hotspots, which use 4G wireless signals the gadget receives to broadcast a Wi-Fi signal consumers can use to surf the Web on other devices, such as phones, tablets or computers.
