Top 10 Twitter trends in 2010 announced

Twitter announced its 10 top trends in 2010 on Monday, and yes, Justin Bieber is on the list.
The No. 1 trending topic on the micro-blogging website this year, however, wasn’t a teenage pop singer. It was the gulf oil spill -- the months-long environmental disaster in which millions of gallons of petroleum leaked into the Gulf of Mexico after an explosion on a BP oil well that killed 11 people.
The leak started in April, and the well was officially capped in September.
Although the environmental disaster, which was the largest accidental oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry, has been referred to in many ways -- ‘BP oil spill,’ ‘BP oil disaster’ and ‘Deepwater Horizon oil spill’ among them -- more people wrote the words ‘gulf oil spill’ on Twitter than any other reference to the tragedy this year.
‘The list of 2010 Twitter trends reflects what’s happening in our world, demonstrates the power of turning any event or story into a shared experience and underscores Twitter’s value as a real-time information network,’ the social media site said in a blog post.
More than 25 billion messages, each tweet 140 characters or less, have been sent so far this year, Twitter said.
The list of this year’s top 10 trending topics is:
- Gulf oil spill
- FIFA World Cup
- Inception
- Haiti earthquake
- Vuvuzela
- Apple iPad
- Google Android
- Justin Bieber
- Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows
- Pulpo Paul
Twitter also made a top 10 trending topic list for eight categories: news events, people, movies, television, technology, World Cup, sports and hashtags. Those lists are posted at yearinreview.twitter.com/trends.
For those wondering who Pulpo Paul is, that would be Paul the Octopus, the sea creature that picked nothing but winning teams during this summer’s FIFA World Cup of fútbol -- er, soccer. Paul, sadly, died in October.
