Tumblr crashes; fans flee to Twitter to complain

It’s been nearly a full day, Tumblr still isn’t working, and legions of passionate Tumblrites are getting antsy on Twitter.

The free blogging service was felled Sunday by “an issue in one of our database clusters,” according to an error message posted on the site. Operators also wrote that they were “working quickly to recover” and were “incredibly sorry.’

And on Monday morning, they were contrite on Twitter as well: “This has been a slow and painful recovery, but we’re almost through. We’ll have more info to share as soon as we can post to our blog again.”

Without a space to post about the Philosoraptor meme or dissect the daily news, fans -- who post on their own blogs and follow a network of others -- have taken to Twitter. And they’re angry.

“If Tumblr doesn’t come back online today they might as well shut down for good,” posted flyosity. “This is pathetic.”

“I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU’RE STILL DOWN @TUMBLR,” wrote copyrapper. “YOU’RE RUINING ME LIFE. WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO TODAY?”

It’s gotten so bad that the hashtag #givememytumblrbackPLEASE has started popping up in posts.

But to some, the blackout is a blessing. The site WhenTumblrIsDown.com sarcastically beseeches users: “When Tumblr is down, you might resort to desperate measures like reading a book.”

“I’m having the hardest time remembering what I did with the internet before @Tumblr,” moaned ryeisenberg.

Updated, 2:50 p.m.: Tumblr users are now able to access their individual blogs but still can’t reach their dashboards -- the customized nerve centers where all the posts from all the Tumblr blogs they follow are consolidated into a single stream. The wait continues...
