Apple TV set to sell more than 1 million units, Apple says
Apple TV sales are on track to top 1 million units this week, Apple said Tuesday morning.
For $99, owners can stream online content from sources such as Netflix, YouTube, Flickr and MobileMe on television sets and also watch high-definition movies and television shows.
The palm-sized second-generation Apple TV was revealed in September and then updated in November.
With more support for AirPlay, powered by iOS 4.2, users can wirelessly stream music, video and photos using iPad, iPhone and the iPod Touch -– which can also control the television using the free Remote application.
Apple said iTunes users are now renting and purchasing 400,000 television episodes and more than 150,000 movies from the service each day. The company did not say how many of those were for Apple TV.
The device’s main competitor, Google TV, seems to have been less of a market darling as it battles resistance from Hollywood and skeptical consumers. Sales figures are not yet available.
