Yahoo Inc. has named former Time Warner Inc. executive Wayne Powers to head North American advertising sales.

Powers, who previously served as president of Time Inc.’s media group, will fill a position that has been vacant since Joanne Bradford left the company in March to join online media group Demand Media Inc.

Yahoo, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., has struggled with ad sales, particularly in North America. Yahoo announced in October that third-quarter revenue rose 1.6% compared with the same period last year, helped in part by lower costs and the sale of help-wanted site HotJobs to rival Monster WorldWide Inc. However, search ad sales dropped 7%.

Yahoo did not provide a start date for Powers, who since 2006 has led Time’s relationships with Fortune 500 advertisers and driven integrated sales across all of Time’s properties.

‘[Powers’] record of brand building with advertisers and his focus on driving revenue through creative executions will serve both Yahoo and Madison Avenue well,’ Ross Levinsohn, Yahoo’s executive vice president of the Americas, said in a statement.
