Amazon Amazon.com said Friday that it plans to hire more than 15,500 people to fill temporary jobs during holidays.

The positions will be at shipping centers around the country. More than 2,000 people are to be hired for the facility in Hebron, Ky., for positions including packing, receiving and shipping.

The Seattle-based online retailer plans to take on more than 2,500 workers in Plainfield, Ind. Thousands more are expected to be hired in Arizona.

Online shopping is expected to surge as the gift-giving season approaches. Wal-Mart said that it will offer free shipping on items through Dec. 20.
