Twitter builds out sales team

At Twitter, it’s never been all about the money.

But it’s more about the money now than before.

Twitter confirmed Tuesday what everyone knew on Monday, that it had hired Adam Bain, former president of News Corp.’s Fox Audience Network, to be its president of global revenue. And it announced that it had recruited Brent Hill, Google’s former head of financial services for the Midwest, to be director of sales for the same region at Twitter. That’s after Twitter hired Amanda Levy, the first in-house sales executive at Yelp, to run West Coast sales, and Dan Coughlin, formerly of Facebook, to run East Coast sales.

Twitter has evolved from a scrappy start-up just trying to keep its service from being crushed by an explosion of Twitter-happy users into a maturing company with 145 million registered users and $160 million in venture capital that is focusing on how it will generate revenue. It has rolled out advertising products that seem to be picking up steam and it’s working on tools to be part of commercial accounts for businesses.
