Google, which dominates Internet advertising, earning nearly all of its $6.82 billion from it last quarter, is trying to expand into new markets. One of those markets is television advertising, which it has been attempting to penetrate for the last three years.

Its pitch: It can improve television ads for the consumers who watch them and the advertisers who buy them by targeting ads to specific audiences in a cost-effective way and at a scale that has never been done before.

Google, which has had an agreement with Dish Network Corp. since 2007, also hopes to attract businesses that have never advertised on television. The deal with DirecTV brings Google a pipeline to about 30 million homes.

Google is pushing for a radical television revolution with the upcoming rollout of Google TV.
