Barely a week after Apple Inc. released the iPad with its much-touted 10 hours of use on a single charge, the Cupertino company gave a similar boost to the battery life of its high-end laptops.

According to Apple’s battery tests, the new 13-inch MacBook Pro computers released Tuesday will last10 hours per charge. The 15- and 17-inch models will go for 8 to 9 hours, Apple said.

The Times has not tested the company’s claims. But Apple has been conservative in battery estimates for previous products. For example, many reports online showed that real-world use of the iPad exceeded Apple’s claim of 10 hours.

The new MacBook Pros contain faster processors and graphics chips than their predecessors. The processor is supplied by Intel and the graphics by Nvidia.

Though Intel’s Core i5 and Core i7 chips are designed to be energy efficient, squeezing 8 to 10 hours out of them is no small feat. Apple designed its own processor called the A4 for the iPad. But the A4 runs at 1 gigahertz while the new Intel chips are more than twice that speed.

The updated Apple laptops maintain the same hardware design and software as previous metal-encased models. Owners cannot easily remove the battery -- unlike with most Windows laptops.
