Cities and counties campaigning to land Google fiber-optic network

With two weeks to go, municipalities across the country are rolling out attention-grabbing campaigns to convince Google that it should build its much-anticipated fiber-optic network in their backyard.

The latest entry to the high-speed Internet lottery is Greenville County in South Carolina with its “We are feeling lucky” campaign.

“We’re all going to make history by forming the world’s first and longest human Google chain in a massive nighttime community-created event called ‘Google on Main’ in downtown Greenville,” the site says. “Warning: Hundreds or perhaps thousands of glowsticks may be harmed during this event.”

This is one tech-savvy place. There’s a YouTube channel featuring citizen videos and a Twitter hashtag: #LuckyGVL.

Wonder what the folks in Topeka, er, Google, Kan., think?
