Kurt the Cyberguy visits Google logo artist Dennis Hwang
Kurt the Cyberguy, who covers tech at our sister TV station KTLA Channel 5, recently took a trip north to the Googleplex to visit artist Dennis Hwang. He's the guy who creates those themed Google logos to commemorate holidays or interesting anniversaries, such as the Summer Olympics, the first day of spring or Alexander Graham Bell's birthday.
Here's the video of Kurt's interview with Hwang:
The world isn't always thrilled with Hwang's choice of subjects, though. As Times reporter Jim Puzzanghera described last year, Google took some heat from conservatives for not being more patriotic when it comes to commemorating events -- such as its decision to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Sputnik launch but not Memorial Day or Veterans Day. A Google spokeswoman responded at the time: "Google's special logos tend to be lighthearted and often scientific in nature. We do not believe we can convey the appropriate somber tone through this medium to mark holidays like Memorial Day."
